LYME CONSERVATION COMMISSION
Minutes – September 6, 2004
The meeting convened at 7:35pm.
The following members of the Commission were in attendance: Joan Goldburgh, Dick Jones, Lee Larson, Vicki May, and Laura McDaniel. No members of the public attended the meeting.
1. Approval of Minutes
Dick moved and Laura seconded a motion to approve the minutes of the Conservation Commission meeting on August 2, 2004. The minutes were approved unanimously.
2. Old Business
a. The status of the snowmobile trail maintenance project in the Town Forest is unknown. Laura will follow-up on this for the next meeting.
b. There was nothing new to report on the Tree City Project.
c. Dick distributed the Town of Lyme’s response to Loch Lyme Lodge Inc.’s petition to Superior Court.
d. Vicki moved and Laura seconded the following motion: The Conservation Commission resolves that all legal decisions regarding the lawsuit brought by Loch Lyme Lodge, Inc. be handled by the Board of Selectmen. The motion passed 4 to 0 with Dick abstaining.
e. Vicki reported that Ben Hudson is available and interested in removing invasive plants at the Chaffee Wildlife Refuge on Thursday, September 9. Since the plants have not yet been marked, however, the Commission decided that Thursday would not work. Vicki will follow-up with Ben, Adair, and Jamie.
f. Eurasian milfoil has been identified in Clay Brook near the Connecticut River. The sample from Post Pond was not Eurasian milfoil; Adair may, however, follow-up and submit a new sample.
3. Wetlands
a. The Stadlers’s dock was approved.
b. The Commission decided that a site visit to the cabin on Whipple Hill Road was not necessary. The Commission members did not feel comfortable making a recommendation for or against this application for a septic system since they do not have the required soil expertise. Lee will draft a letter to Zoning Board.
c. A site visit to the Crossroads Academy gravel pit reclamation project will be scheduled for sometime in October when more Commission members are available.
4. New Business
a. Dick reported doing some weed whacking.
b. Lee discussed fall trail maintenance needs. Additional puncheon installations are needed in the Chaffee Wildlife Refuge and Grant Brook; the Commission will schedule these installations in October. Also weed whacking is needed on several Conservation Commission maintained trails.
c. Lee will purchase a cable to support the bridge, which was recently built in the Town Forest, against flood.
d. Lee will hire someone to fill the potholes on the road into Trout Pond.
e. Dick moved and Laura seconded a motion to approve $350 from the Chaffee Wildlife Management portion of the Conservation Fund for mowing at the Chaffee Refuge. The motion was approved.
f. Lee asked for names of people from Lyme who might be interested in the Appalachian Trail Conference’s sponsorship of Keeping Track training. Several names were suggested, and Lee will contact them to see if they are interested.
The meeting adjourned at 8:50pm.
