LYME CONSERVATION COMMISSION
Minutes – November 6, 2006
1. The meeting convened at 7:30 PM with the following in attendance: James Graham, Dick Jones, Lee Larson, Vicki May, Matt Stevens and Mimi Weinstein.
2. Natural Resources Inventory:
a. Lee reported that to date $4,000 in private contributions have been received. Dave Roby wrote letters to approximately 30 people, and Dave felt the contributions by members of the Commission were a great help in his fund raising efforts.
b. Lee then led a discussion of the field work accomplished by Watershed to Wildlife. They have visited approximately 15 of the sites identified as of special interest, leaving a dozen for visits by local volunteers. These dozen sites were then discussed and possible volunteers with extensive local knowledge of them were identified. Vickie Davis will coordinate the local volunteer site visits and compile their reports.
3. The Post Pond water level/beaver issues were again discussed:
a. The person hiring a trapper for the beavers (and the trapper) are aware that they may only trap beavers in the pond and do not have permission to trap beavers in Clay or Trout Brooks.
b. Lee and Matt reported that there has been some confusion over the wetlands permit for the beaver deceiver (which also included the revetment project for Grant Brook). Currently it is anticipated that Skip Lisle will be installing the deceiver in the near future.
4. The revetment project for Grant Brook is currently on hold pending resolution of wetlands permit issues with DES.
5. Vicki reported on the “Carbon Co2alition” proposed Town Meeting warrant article. She is coordinating getting enough signatures to have it included on the Warrant as a petition article.
6. Lee led a discussion of a proposed rerouting of the Western Forest Trail to avoid the steep section of the snowmobile trail and include a fine view overlook to the east and northeast of Smarts, Cube and Moosilauke. Peter Magowan has asked permission to clear a few small to medium trees to open up the view. Matt moved and Mimi seconded a motion to give him permission to do so. It passed unanimously.
7. The parking under the trees on the south side of the “Little Common” by school staff was discussed. It was felt that this was adversely impacting the trees and James agreed to draft a letter to the school requesting that they seek an alternative place for staff parking overflow.
8. Lee will prepare an article on the beaver deceiver for the next “Conservation Corner” in the Church News.
9. The meeting adjourned at 8:45.
