The first lookout on Smarts Mountain was built in 1915. The current tower was constructed by the NH Forestry Commission in 1939. It is a 41’ steel tower with a 7’ by 7’ cab. It is the last International Derrick tower in New Hampshire constructed with emergency federal funds following the 1938 hurricane. The tower was refurbished in 1994 by a crew of students from the Dartmouth Outing Club.
The tower was named to the National Historic Lookout Registry because of its unique history and spectacular view. The registry offers the town no official protection.
