Emergency Services

Fire Department Overview

The Lyme Fire Department supports the town in fire safety and emergency response. Outdoor burning of ordinary combustibles like leaves, brush, or untreated lumber requires a permit unless the ground is completely covered with snow. Gas grills and charcoal fires in containers above ground do not require a permit. Before lighting a fire, notify the dispatch center with details of when and where you will be burning.

House‑Numbering Program

To help emergency responders find your home quickly, clearly display reflective house numbers in visible locations. Proper placement helps responders, especially at night, locate your home when time is critical.

House Numbering Guidelines

Numbers should be:

  • At least 3 inches high and 2½ inches wide
  • Reflective for visibility

Suggested Locations

  • On the house near the entrance door at eye level
  • On mailboxes (number both sides, visible when the flag is down)
  • On posts four feet above the ground to avoid snow cover
  • If your driveway is shared or long, add numbering and directional signage along the way

Additional Tips

  • Ensure the telephone company has your correct street address
  • Make sure everyone in your household knows the correct address

Assistance

  • Local hardware stores and volunteers may be able to help with purchasing or installing house numbers.
  • The program is supported by the Lyme FAST Squad, Fire Department, and Police Department.

Forest Fire Warden

How to Reach Us:

If you wish to burn clean, ordinary combustibles such as leaves, brush or untreated lumber or have a camp or cooking fire, state law requires you obtain a fire permit unless the ground where you are burning is completely covered with snow. (Gas grills or charcoal fires in a container up and off the ground on your own property do not require a fire permit.) Conditions permitting, fire permits may be obtained from the Online Burn Permitting System, the Forest Fire Warden, Ernst Kling, or Deputy Forest Fire Warden, Charles Ragan. Before lighting a fire, notify the dispatch center at 643-2222 where and when you will be burning.
